Karen holds a B.S. in ocean engineering from Purdue University and an M.S. in ocean engineering from the Johns Hopkins University. She worked for over 14 years at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory designing sensor systems for the Navy and Department of Defense. She began keeping bees 15 years ago and began working with Dennis in 2010 to manage and conduct the APHIS National Honey Bee Survey and then the Bee Informed Partnership in 2011. She has been the Lab's Project Manager since 2010 and was the founding Executive Director of the Bee Informed Partnership when it transitioned to a nonprofit. She relishes escaping from behind the desk to work bees whenever she can.
