About the Lab
The University of Maryland Bee Lab is dedicated to improving bee health.
Our team focuses on implementing an epidemiological approach to understanding honey bee health. We focus on surveillance, monitoring the major risk factors such as pests and pathogens, parasites, and pesticides associated with managed honey bees. Our team has led and managed the USDA APHIS National Honey Bee Disease Survey since 2009, a large honey bee health surveillance project active in more than 40 states and US territories. We were the founding institution of the Bee Informed Partnership and led the organization from founding (in 2013) until 2020 (unfortunately this organization disbanded in 2023).
UMD Bee Lab Extension is focused on serving Maryland's robust and knowledgeable beekeeping community. We provide talks to local groups and develop specialized programs to meet different beekeeper needs.
