Rating Brood Pattern

Rating a colony’s brood pattern provides a direct reflection of queen productivity and overall hive health. A solid, compact pattern indicates a high-performing queen. A less solid pattern can be an warning sign of a failing queen, nutritional stress, or the presence of brood diseases. A very spotty or "shotgun" pattern may indicate more serious issues relating to colony and brood health.

By tracking this on your datasheet, you can forecast future colony populations and identify colonies that may need intervention.

Rate brood pattern on a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being the most spotty or “shotgun” pattern and a brood pattern of 5 being a very solid, compact pattern. Use the images below as a guide.
